Sachsen: Students in Some Universities to Receive Discounted Germany Ticket
In a recent development, it has been announced that students in some universities in Sachsen, Germany will be eligible for a discounted Germany ticket starting from the summer semester. This initiative aims to provide affordable transportation options for students within the region. However, it is important to note that not all universities in Sachsen will be included in this program, creating some disparity in access to the discounted ticket.
Varying Availability in Different Cities
According to reports, Leipzig will obligate all seven universities to provide their students with the so-called “Deutschland-Semesterticket” as part of the mandatory semester ticket. This ticket will cost 176.40 euros for the entire semester or 29.40 euros per month. Similarly, Dresden will offer the discounted ticket to students from a total of eleven universities. Negotiations are still ongoing for the Technical University of Chemnitz, while the Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau has already reached an agreement. However, the TU Freiberg and the Hochschule Mittweida have not yet secured any agreement due to lack of interest from the student body. In Zittau/Görlitz, the discounted Germany ticket will be available from the winter semester of 2024/2025. Students attending the Berufsakademie Sachsen will have different arrangements depending on the location. For instance, in Leipzig, the offer will be applicable.
Previous Options and the Introduction of the Germany Ticket
In the past, students had the option to upgrade their regular semester tickets to the Germany ticket. The additional cost for this upgrade varied depending on the location. For example, in Dresden, the upgrade fee was 16.60 euros, making the total cost 49 euros per month. However, with the introduction of the new program, the discounted Germany ticket is now available at a fixed price of 29.40 euros per month.
“Students will now have more affordable options for traveling within Germany, thanks to the introduction of the discounted Germany ticket. This initiative aims to support students in their academic journey by providing affordable transportation solutions.”
The implementation of the Germany ticket was agreed upon by the federal government and the states in November. However, it is important to note that the contracts with the transportation companies and the student committees of each university are required for the successful implementation of this program, just like with regular semester tickets.
