Visitors Flock to Oberwiesenthal for a “Super Weekend”
Oberwiesenthal, a popular winter sports destination, experienced a bustling weekend as ski enthusiasts from all over Saxony made their way to the town. The slopes were filled with eager skiers and snowboarders, taking advantage of the abundant snow, icy temperatures, and clear blue skies.
Perfect Weather Conditions Delight Visitors
The chief of the Fichtelberg Cable Car, René Lötzsch, expressed his excitement about the weekend, stating, “It was a super weekend. We had fantastic weather, at least until Sunday afternoon. The conditions on the slopes, cross-country trails, and toboggan runs were perfect. However, the wind picked up later on.” Lötzsch’s enthusiasm was shared by many, as hundreds of skiers gathered at the lifts in Oberwiesenthal.
One visitor, Karsten Richter, who had traveled with his family from Mittweida, revealed, “We woke up at 5 am today. We’re just enjoying the experience.” The Fichtelberg attracted numerous guests, particularly from Dresden, Leipzig, and Chemnitz, leading to long queues at the ticket counters for the lifts and the cable car. Equipment rental shops and sled vendors also had their hands full catering to the needs of the visitors.
Saxony’s Highest Peak Offers Ideal Snow Conditions
Oberwiesenthal’s highest peak, at 1215 meters, boasts a snow depth of around 50 centimeters, while the valley has 30 centimeters of snow. René Lötzsch explained, “The slopes mainly have machine-made snow, which has mixed with the fresh snowfall.”
This Super Weekend getaway provided exciting outdoor activities for both locals and visitors alike, including skiing, snowboarding, and even sledding. With the breathtaking scenery of the Fichtelberg and the excellent snow conditions, Oberwiesenthal proved to be a perfect destination for winter sports enthusiasts.
