Berliner-Variationen: fünf Volltreffer
They say Berliners are as essential to carnival as confetti and streamers. So, what better time than during the festive season to taste this specialty? The Guller test editorial team had the opportunity to sample five different variations of filled donuts from the Confiserie Gmeiner in Appenweier: strawberry, quince, vanilla, chocolate, and eggnog.
All of them are delicious, as they are made with fresh, soft yeast dough that is not overly sweet. They are baked to a golden-brown perfection, with the classic light ring in the middle. Despite being a fried pastry, the taste of oil doesn’t overpower; they were simply perfect.
The undisputed number one among all tasters was the variation with sugar glaze and quince jam. The fresh and fruity taste of quince complements the dough and topping wonderfully. The most well-known variation, sprinkled with granulated sugar, boasts a filling of strawberry jam – a classic done right. The filling of delicious vanilla cream is light and not overly sweet. A dark chocolate nut cream at the center and finely shaved chocolate on top make this one irresistible – the filling melts delicately in the mouth. Finest brittle meets eggnog: the combination is a match made in heaven. Pleasantly, the eggnog doesn’t overpower.
This delightful assortment of Berliner variations offers a range of flavors to satisfy every taste bud. From the fruity freshness of quince to the classic strawberry, the creamy vanilla, the indulgent chocolate, and the irresistible combination of brittle and eggnog – each one a unique delight.
Whether enjoyed as a carnival treat or simply as a sweet indulgence, these Berliners are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. So, why not treat yourself and savor the delights of Berliner-Variationen: fünf Volltreffer!
