Rediscovering a Treasure from the First World War
On January 9, 2024, at 4:31 pm, Hermann Neurohr reminisces about a cherished heirloom from his grandmother, Sophie Herrmann. As a child, Hermann was fascinated by an album of old field postcards that his grandmother had received from her fiancé during the First World War. Despite his demise, Sophie had safeguarded the album as if it were a treasure.
With gentle hands, Neurohr flips through the album, revealing a collection of postcards adorned with images of soldiers, accompanied by thoughtful sayings and patriotic undertones. Each meticulously preserved card bears intricate, yet tiny, handwriting that has become less common in present times. Until his untimely death on the battlefield, Sophie Herrmann, born in Achern in 1889, and her beloved exchanged their experiences.
“I believe he was her great love, although she never explicitly stated it,” speculates the now 86-year-old Hermann Neurohr.
Another precious memento of his grandmother is her diary. Within its pages, she sporadically recorded notable aspects of her daily life, which ranged from tales about the city, to observations about the weather, and personal experiences such as visits from relatives.
